College-aged young adults appear to have a higher rate of problems than the general population. However, most research has been focused on adults and has not considered disordered gambling in young adults outside of North America. That’s probably because most adolescents gamble rarely or infrequently.
Research on the topic is in its infancy, but it has already been found in Australia and other European countries. In fact, a British Gambling Prevalence Study reported higher problem gambling estimates for college-aged men than for the general population.
Many state and federal governments are considering legislation to regulate Internet-based gambling. This could mean more gambling in people’s homes. Additionally, it could bring more gambling into businesses and into the lives of consumers. Although online gambling is legal in some states, the United Kingdom does not permit this type of activity.
Currently, only twenty states allow residents to place bets on sporting events through the Internet. The rest of the country, though, has a limited variety of options for betting on the web. Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, and Tennessee are among the states that offer a limited amount of online gambling. Meanwhile, New Jersey has an age restriction for gambling.
In order to promote fair gaming, most of these sites allow their players to set limits on their losses. Most gambling sites are reputable, but there are some instances of misconduct. One example is David Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports. He has a history of racist and misogynistic behavior.
